Norwegian Breakaway Cruise – April 2019 – Day 2

We sleep well. A good nine hours in fact which I never seem to get back home. Breakaway if close to the coast of Cuba and you can in fact clearly see the skyline of Havana in the distance. The Gulf of Mexico is calm and the sun is just rising behind the ship as she makes steady progress towards Roatan. A very nice way to start my birthday.

I open my gifts from Peter which include the latest Apple Watch. I already have version 2 but this is the upgraded version 4. I have plenty of cards to open from family and friends and Peter insists on dressing the cabin with decorations sent by Mhairi that they had planned to use on Oasis.

We breakfast in Sabor. This is one of the complimentary restaurants on the ship along with Taste and the Manhattan Room. The decor in the restaurant is sophisticated and classy. I order Eggs Benedict which is cooked perfectly and Peter has his normal eggs over medium with sausage and bacon.

To work off some of the breakfast we walk the lengths of decks 6,7 and 8 which is the location for most of the other restaurants, shops and venues. We venture up to the sun deck where things are still pretty quiet. It’s a sea day today so I expect these areas to get busy later. We venture towards the back of the ship where all the water slides and adventure walkways are. I don’t see myself participating in those but am sure Peter will brave some of the slides.

We have a coffee at Spice H2O before heading back to the room. We gather some things and head down to the Waterfront to relax. We bump into Scott & Steve again and find that they managed to stay up until 2am. Well, they are a lot younger than us.

Peter heads off to the Cruise Critic Meeting and then to a slot pull. I head back to the cabin to find even more decorations have been added. Balloons and Banners galore. Peter returns about 1pm and he managed to increase his $20 stake to $29 on the slot pull. Every little helps.

We lunch in the Garden Cafe where I have salad and cold meats followed by Chicken Taseo. It was really good. Peter has similar but opted for grilled chicken. Apple strudel follows. Only day one and I can tell we will need to get back on the calorie counting t when we get home…but not today.

We witness some raucous events by the main pool as the men’s sexy legs competition is in full swing. Some not so shy guys are strutting their stuff for a group of lady judges. They are not holding back. The afternoon is spent pretty much like the morning. Lazily. There are some lovely big sofa chairs on the Waterfront that are perfect to curl up in and either snooze or in my case listen to music. Late afternoon Peter heads to the Gym. I do some yoga type back excercises in the cabin. I am determined not to have this trip spoilt by another bad back.

We dress for dinner and head to the Martini Bar where I enjoy an excellent Expresso Martini. We then head to the Mixx Bar before making our way to Cagneys Steakhouse for dinner. The Shrimp Cocktail is amazing and the shrimp themselves are huge. We both order the 8oz Filet which is very good but we both comment that they are a little cool but nine nonetheless.

We change out of our dinner finery and head up to Spice H2O where there is a party tonight. It’s a beautiful evening and we dance until the small hours and imbibe a little too much wine. All in all, it was a great birthday on Norwegian Breakaway. Tomorrow we reach The island of Roatan in Honduras.
