Early to bed means we are early to wake. A little too early in my book but once I am awake Iam awake. It’s 6:45 and Breakaway has made it to Majorca. It’s a beautiful morning as the Majorican city awakes. We are closely followed into port by P&O Arvia who we will be sailing on in October this year.
We breakfast in either Taste or Savor this morning (they are very similar). Eggs Benedict for me of course. Peter has a more traditional breakfast of eggs, bacon and sausage. Service as usual is quick, efficient and friendly. the staff always seem a little shocked at the amount we order. Other tables seem to order everything on the menu.
The previous evening Peter had purchased tickets for the return shuttle bus from the pier into the centre of Palma. At $20 per person we think it’s a little steep but unless you are a champion walker the distance into town is a little too far.
The bus drops us off at the cathedral and we head into the city. I am careful to avoid the spot where I tripped and fell last year only to nearly trip over a tree roots a few hundred yards later. Thankfully I manage to stay upright.
We wander through the pretty cathedral park and gardens and onto the passieg de born which I always refer to as the mini Ramblas. Posh designer shops flank it all the way up. We stop at an outdoor coffee shop and order two cafe con leche before we continue our walk. We are amazed at the ornate architecture that adorn a lot of the buildings. One is covered in a myriad of small carved heads. Most look normal but one is of a woman with a forked tongue licking her lips. I wonder what the story there is?
We stop at an Ale Hop which is a very popular gadget type shop here in Spain. Peter is looking for some wrist straps for his watch that he purchased last time we were here but they don’t appear to sell anymore. He does buy a pride rainbow coloured water bottle though.
Next we stumble across two magnificent churches that are quite close to each other. One we can’t enter but the other we do. It is Good Friday and preparations seem to be well under way to celebrate this Holy Week.
We end up walking full circle and back near the main cathedral where we stop for a rest. The place is crowded with tourists and street hawkers selling fake Louis Vuitton bags and sunglasses.
We jump back onto a shuttle bus for the short trip back to the ship. We head up to a very quiet Garden Cafe for lunch. By the time we leave it’s getting much busier. I guess some tour groups have returned to the ship…it’s all in the timing.
In the evening we have a show to see at the theatre. Burn the Floor. It’s an excellent production covering almost all types of Latin and ballroom dancing. In addition to the dancing we are treated to some very good vocal performances from the singers.
We dine in the Manhattan Room this evening. We are quickly seated and order Cheese Ravioli, Spare Ribs, Chicken Piccatta, Bang Bang Chicken and S’Mores Brownies. Portion sizes are good. So much so that we don’t finish dessert.
